PROJECT OVERVIEW
Jack Trice Stadium – Iowa State University Storefront & Curtain Wall Design Engineering
JEI provided structural engineering and design calculations for the storefront and curtain wall systems supporting the South End Zone Expansion at Jack Trice Stadium, home of the Iowa State Cyclones.
The approximately $60 million renovation transformed the stadium’s south entrance into a signature campus destination while creating a dramatically improved game-day experience. The project enclosed the previously open south end zone, connecting the east and west grandstands into one continuous stadium and increasing seating capacity to approximately 61,000 spectators.
A centerpiece of the expansion is the two-level premium club overlooking the field through expansive glazed curtain wall systems. The extensive glass provides unobstructed views into the stadium while creating a bright, climate-controlled hospitality environment overlooking both the playing field and the university campus.
Engineering Challenges
Modern stadium glazing systems must do much more than provide aesthetics.
This project required structural engineering solutions capable of accommodating:
- Large curtain wall openings overlooking occupied spectator areas
- Wind loads on expansive glazed façades
- Building movement between structural framing and glazing systems
- Long-span framing connections
- Thermal movement and differential deflection
- Coordination with structural steel, architectural detailing, and stadium construction sequencing
By engineering these systems early in the process, JEI helped support a coordinated glazing package designed for long-term performance.
JEI’s Role
JEI provided engineering services for the storefront and curtain wall systems, including:
- Structural engineering and delegated design support
- Curtain wall engineering
- Storefront engineering
- Structural design calculations
- Coordination with the project design team
- Engineering documentation supporting fabrication and installation
Why Stadium Glazing Engineering Matters
Sports venues present unique structural challenges that differ significantly from traditional commercial buildings.
Large spans, crowd-induced vibration, wind exposure, thermal movement, and complex steel framing all place additional demands on glazing systems. Proper engineering helps ensure that glass, framing, anchors, and connections work together while maintaining weather performance, occupant safety, and long-term durability.
JEI specializes in engineering these high-performance glazing systems for stadiums, arenas, universities, commercial buildings, and other complex structures.
