Helping Shape the Glass Façade of Kansas City’s Crossroads

REVERB is a distinctive 14-story residential tower at 18th and Walnut in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District.

Designed to complement one of Kansas City’s most creative urban neighborhoods, the building combines contemporary architecture, residential living, street-level commercial space and rooftop amenities in a highly visible addition to the downtown skyline.

JEI Structural provided curtain wall design and structural engineering for glass storefront and glass entry systems on the project.

The completed building includes 132 residences above two levels of parking, approximately 2,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and rooftop gathering space overlooking Kansas City.

REVERB was completed in 2020 and was subsequently recognized with a Kansas City Business Journal Capstone Award in the multifamily category.

Engineering Glass Into a Distinctive High-Rise

REVERB was developed using a design-build approach that encouraged collaboration between architecture, engineering and construction.

That coordination is particularly important at the building envelope.

Curtain wall, storefront and entrance systems must satisfy the architectural vision while responding to structural loads, building movement, connection requirements and the realities of fabrication and installation.

The REVERB project brought together Kansas City-based development and design-build expertise to create a modern residential tower within the historic Crossroads Arts District.

Burns & McDonnell’s project team described the design-build process as an opportunity to explore alternative materials, structural shapes and forms while balancing project requirements and budget.

That same collaborative philosophy applies to façade engineering.

The earlier structural requirements, architectural intent and glazing-system capabilities are coordinated, the greater the opportunity to solve issues before they become submittal, fabrication or field problems.
