MIT (Building 55) Tina and Hamid Moghadam Building

JEI Structural partnered with Bellwether and the design team on the Tina and Hamid Moghadam Building (MIT Building 55) in Cambridge, MA, providing glass veil, glass storefront, and skylight glass engineering and consulting for a new gateway hub dedicated to climate and environmental sciences. The two-story addition connects directly to MIT’s iconic Cecil and Ida Green Building (Building 54), creating a light-filled lobby, atrium, and exhibition space that visually links the campus, the Charles River, and the City of Boston through continuous glass walls.  Designed to meet LEED-Platinum certification, the project features an innovative façade strategy where a warm wood-composite rainscreen is overlaid with bracketed glass panels, producing a shimmering glass veil that reflects surrounding trees and green space while maintaining high performance for wind, thermal, and moisture control.

On this project, JEI’s scope focused on glass veil façade engineering, high-performance glass storefront systems, and skylight glass engineering and consulting to support the building’s role as an interdisciplinary climate research hub. Our team reviewed loads, spans, and anchorage for the glass veil system, coordinated with Bellwether and the architect to fine-tune mullion profiles and connections, and provided glass thickness, laminate, and coating recommendations aligned with energy, durability, and visual-clarity goals. For the main glass storefront and atrium façades, JEI evaluated deflection limits, live-load drift, and movement joints to ensure long-term performance at the campus entry. The skylight glass engineering and consulting services addressed daylighting, snow and wind loading, and condensation control, helping deliver a bright, welcoming “campus living room” that supports collaboration while protecting occupants and finishes in a harsh New England climate.
