Gorilla Breaks Glass at San Diego Zoo Animal Exhibit

Temper, Temper

Experts say it’s common for Gorilla’s to beat on glass because of the sound it makes.  They use it scare away peers.  Gorillas can be aggressive.  There are lots of examples online of animals breaking glass.   Our team, by quick observation, can tell that tempered glass was not used in this case.

Zoo Exhibit Design Company Assessment by JEI Structural Engineering

JEI has works often as a zoo exhibit design company. One of our engineers commented, “I can’t imagine that they didn’t use tempered glass for a gorilla exhibit. They said they used 6 layers. 6 layers of 1/2″ would be 3″ thick total.”   Another speculated, “It could be HS or a layer of polycarb for some reason.  Doesn’t make a lot of sense though.”  Unless they were trying to avoid distortion issues from tempering, which is usually the case when tempered glass is not used.  Often design teams want to avoid the roller waves that are the tell tell of tempering.  Even though, we sure replacing the glass will be a significant expense!    In life and engineering, everything has it’s trade offs or pros and cons.

We’re happy no people or animals were harmed during this incident.
